General Greetings

Greetings Overview

'Ingoni', 'ingoni ku', 'nyi ingoni?' are common Madi greetings.

  • Ingoni – The direct translation is 'How?'' (however in greeting it means 'Hello')
  • Ingoni ku – The direct translation is 'How, no' (however, in greeting it means 'I’m good' as a response to ‘Ingoni’)
  • Nyi ingoni? – This means 'how are you'

Note: Ingoni ku should only be used as a response to Ingoni.

It would not make sense to use 'Ingoni ku' as a response to Nyi ingoni?. The correct response would be 'Ma cui' meaning 'I'm well'.
